Thank you to all the fabulous women who joined us June 29th for our event on Women’s Expression of Sex and Sexuality.  The night included scintillating conversation and rousing performances by the devine Khani Jo Zulu Belly Dancer, word wizard and performance artist Flint, sizzling songstress Brie Feingold-Africa  and the beautiful burlesque dancer Penny Starr Jr.  The room was certainly steamy by the end of the evening!

SEXLEBRITY, PENNY STARR, JR

Penny Starr, Jr. is a Sexlebrity of epic proportions, just read her bio below. She’ll take your wig off. If you attend the June 29th show, you’ll get to meet Penny, live and in person. Are you plotzing?! We are, too!

Called a “delightful sexpot” by the LA Weekly, Penny Starr Jr. is the  “Pe-Tite Barnum of Burlesque”.

After spending 3 years making the documentary THE VELVET HAMMER BURLESQUE, it was no wonder that she decided to pick up the mantle held by her grandmother, Philadelphia burlesque dancer Penny Starr. 

Or, as Penny Starr Jr.  puts it, “You can only live with the circus for so long before you want to join!”

Making her debut at the legendary Miss Exotic World Burlesque Competition, PS Jr. ended her debut burlesque number by jumping in the pool that was the center of the outdoor performance space, giving new meaning to the word “breast stroke”.  In 2004, on her first anniversary of performing, Penny Starr, Jr. became First Runner-Up at the annual Miss Exotic World burlesque competition.

Penny Starr, Jr. continues to pop up all over the country, and dare I say, Canada.  She was a recurring dancer at the legendary Bricktops at the Parlour Club and Margaret Cho’s The Sensuous Woman.  She has made guest appearances in shows like, Lucha Va Voom, Joey Altruda’s Macabaret,, Cannibal Flower art event, the W Hotel in San Diego, the Va Va Voom Room in San Francisco, Skin Tight Outta Sight Rebel Burlesque in Toronto, Starshine Burlesque and the Slipper Room in NYC and the Peek-A-Boo Revue in Philadelphia, as well as the big burlesque events:  Tease-O-Rama, Exotic World and the New York Burlesque Fest.   She has been featured in the burlesque edition of STYLE MONTE CARLO, has been a centerfold for BARRACUDA MAGAZINE and currently writes the entertainment article for BACHELOR PAD MAGAZINE.

She and Penny, Sr. have performed the first and only grandmother/granddaughter striptease act.

In addition to dancing, Penny is the founder of the Striptease Symposium burlesque classes and produces and directs the Princess Farhana line of belly dance and burlesque instructional DVDs.

In the past, she has co-produced JESUS CHRIST’S HOLIDAY BURLESQUE REVUE, SUPERNOVA A-GO-GO during the San Diego Int’l Comic Book Convention, the film and burlesque event THE DD DOUBLE FEATURE (in Park City, Austin, Memphis, New Orleans and Los Angeles) and the 1920’s club CLUB SCHMUTZIG. 

Currently, she is producing the monthly variety show VICTORY VARIETY HOUR (“Raunchy, Bawdy and Fun” LAWeekly.com, voted one of the best shows in LA by Bizarre Magazine) at El Cid in Los Angeles.

Dames, dames, everywhere dames!  Here’s another peak at the fabulosity that happened at our first event.

Sexlebrity, Khani Jo Zulu

Khani is a belly dancing sexlebrity who absolutely loves, loves, loves what she does. She’s a sexy, proud dame with an incredible background in dance.

Khani will be performing live at the Vanguard on Monday, June 29th, so don’t forget to RSVP sooner than later… Tickets are going fast, beautiful dames.

About Belly Dancer, Khani Jo Zulu

Dancing is all I have ever wanted to do.  According to my mom, I started dancing before I could walk even.  She loves to tell the story of when the Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum commercial would come on TV; I would pull myself up and dance to it.  I started taking dance classes when I was 4.   I began teaching jazz and gymnastics when I was 12 and toured the U.S. as a teenager with the Stars of Tomorrow.  I won numerous awards and recognitions competing in dance competitions as a teenager.

My dance background includes ballet, jazz, modern, and belly dance, and I have most recently started fire dancing and hooping.

I have a BFA in Dance with a concentration in choreography from the University of Texas at Austin.  During and after college, I was a member of a professional modern dance troupe in Austin, TX, called the Andrea Aerial Dance Troupe.  I also performed as a guest artist with Jose Bustamante and Yacov Sharir of the Yacov Sharir Dance Company and Lori Wilson of Tallulah Dance Company.  I directed my own professional troupe in 1993-1996 called Utopia in Austin, TX.  I won an award in 1996 for “best choreography” for a musical at the Planet Theatre in Austin, TX, called “Lucifa.”

When I moved to LA 10 years ago, I had every intention of “making it” as a dancer in this town.  Unfortunately, due to injury, I had to take a break for a while.

As an aging and injured dancer, I found tribal and tribal fusion belly dance several years ago.  I love the belly dance community because it is such a supportive and non-judgmental community of women of all shapes and sizes.   It is empowering to be a part of.  I also love that it’s a form of dance that a woman can do as she gracefully ages and grows in wisdom and experience.

I am excited to share my experience and knowledge in the hopes that other women will find themselves, as I have, in the world of dance and movement!

As you know, Three Dames With A Clue’s second show “Women’s Expression of Sex and Sexuality“, is on Monday, June 29th. We expect to see all of your beautiful faces. If you haven’t RSVP’d, please do so, as space is filling up fast!

We wanted to introduce you to some of the Sexlebrities who will be performing at the show. Today, we’re proud to present singer/songwriter Brie Feingold-Africa. After you’ve read all about her, be sure to friend her on MySpace. Even better, we’ve got links that lead you right to her CDs, available for purchase right now.

Brie Feingold-Africa’s life-changing debut performance was deemed a Best Theatrical Moment of 2002 by Philadelphia City Paper. Her album The Singer-Songwriter Song is available at CD Baby. Her terrifying yet moving music inspired Benjamin Matvey to write the book for the play Brie! The Musical Dissertation, featuring many of her most-beloved songs. Feingold-Africa was invited to present her work at the Ninth Annual Symposium of Theater in Academe at Washington and Lee University, so she did, though she never did figure out what those people really wanted. She has headlined in NYC, performed for Comedy Central in LA, and blown through a bunch of other no-name towns as well.

SEX, SEX, SEX

On June 29th, 2009, Live at the Vanguard, Three Dames With A Clue will proudly to present: Women’s Expression of Sex and Sexuality. Irreverently, humorously, embarrassedly, frustratingly, and honestly, we will sexpress ourselves.

Some of us have come into our own sexually, while others of us haven’t. Sex, regardless of how you see it, conservatively, unabashedly, or on the fencedly, one thing is certain, we women (straight, gay, bi, transgender) have pretty God damned strong opinions about the matter. This show is our moment to get our sexalicious dish on.  

Bonus: Everyone who RSVP’s, is invited to bring a 90 second snippet to share. Stand up or sit down, but say it proudly, even if it’s the most embarrassing moment of your life. Whatever you say will be welcomed with open arms.
